  • My house has aluminum wiring, do I need to rewire it?

Rewiring your home, is the best solution, however, can be very costly.

You have to the consider the cost of probable drywall repair and re-painting after completion.

Many homes in Orange County were built in the 60s, when aluminum was more available and less expensive than copper. This wiring poses problems such as outlet failures, sometimes noticeable burn marks on the face of the outlet and in the worst condition- house fires.

Aluminum is prone to oxidation over time and because it contracts and expands more than copper, there is a potential problem of overheating that arises from weaker connections and from the use of incompatible devices.

Pigtailing helps as a safeguard against the risk of fire in homes where aluminum wire exists or has shown indications of failure and overheating at termination points.

The process involves removing all existing devices, strip and twist the conductors together and adding a copper piece of wire to the existing wire with a deoxidant compound. This compound prevents the dissimilar metals from corroding. We then install a new device and wall plate.

There are also connectors called Alumicon connectors that use torque screw connections with the deoxidant pre-installed in each unit.

This process localizes future possible failures to the point of usage, by eliminating the series run wiring.

Pigtailing your home is the best affordable solution that provides comparable safety measures.
